"In appointing Phil and Hanover Fox, we felt confident that our name and standing within this specialist field would be in good hands"

Tallow Chandlers

CEO/Clerk

The Tallow Chandlers’ Company is one of the oldest of the 111 Livery companies in London, and was granted full Livery status in 1462. Today, with around 320 members, the focus is on the education of young people with a particular emphasis on three state schools in London, as well as supporting charities and military organisations.  The Company needed to replace their retiring current Clerk/CEO, David Homer, after his significant contribution to the development of the organisation.

David Homer said “We invited three executive search firms to present to us, all with previous livery company exposure. We were delighted with the decision to appoint Hanover Fox and Phil de Glanville. The team’s commercial backgrounds and clear understanding of our aims shone through. We liked the fact that the co-owner and Director of the business was leading the project at all times and was reachable 24 hours a day.”

The role was incredibly popular with over 150 candidates meeting the role requirements on paper and a dedicated appointments panel set up by the Company, chaired by the Master, Hugh Wolley;

“When considering the depth and detail used in the candidate research, the management of the entire candidate process, the confidential referencing procedure and the overall valuable advice received by all involved, I consider the whole project was very good value.

The upfront agreement of milestones and timescales was greatly valued, allowing commitment to timings and decision-making windows. We also valued the transparency of the process during our regular update meetings, leaving everyone in a clear and focused mindset.

In appointing Phil and Hanover Fox, we felt confident that our name and standing within this specialist field would be in good hands. His professionalism, confidentiality and understanding of our brief was simply first class.”

The new Clerk, Nel Doherty, was successfully appointed. She will start in September 2025.
