Inheritance tax relief for property-based businesses

As land values have increased considerably in the last few decades without any significant increase in the inheritance tax nil rate band, the availability of tax relief has become ever more important.

One of the main reliefs relevant to land is Business Property Relief or BPR. Under BPR legislation, relief is given for ‘relevant business property’, the definition of which specifically excludes any business which consists wholly or mainly of making or holding investments. Wholly or mainly is defined as over 50% for the purposes of inheritance tax.
